D. Questions for the consultation
Ask these in the room and note the answers on paper. Anything still unclear can be asked again.
General
- 1
At the consultation, will you show me before-and-afters of the treatment I’m interested in?from their pages
What a solid answer includes: A directly responsive answer states whether clinic-owned patient photographs are available and whose work they show, rather than relying on stock or brand imagery.
- 2
Do you discuss alternatives — including not treating — at the consultation?
What a solid answer includes: A directly responsive answer describes relevant alternatives, including the option of no treatment. Professional guidance expects consultations to cover alternatives (GMC guidance on cosmetic interventions; GDC Standards 2.2.1).
- 3
If a treatment failed later — say an implant or an infection — how would you put it right, and would it cost me?
What a solid answer includes: A directly responsive answer states who would address the problem, the expected timing, any costs and the written terms of any guarantee.
Which treatment are you going in for?
Choose up to two. Questions for the room will be added below. This choice is not saved.
For this kind of clinic
- 4
Can you show me the GDC registration of the person treating me?
What a solid answer includes: A directly responsive answer gives the name and GDC number, which you can check on the GDC register, and says who else may treat you.
- 5
Can I have a written treatment plan with the total cost before we start?
What a solid answer includes: A directly responsive answer provides a written plan listing each item, its price and what could change it. GDC standards expect a written treatment plan and cost estimate before treatment (a professional standard).
E. Things to observe and note
These don't show up on a website. None of them mean something is wrong; they are simply worth noticing and weighing as part of your decision.
Before & after: is it a fair comparison?
If you are shown photographs, check:
- Same patient and treated area; the treatment is identified.
- Angle, distance or zoom, crop, posture and expression are comparable.
- Lighting, background and camera perspective are comparable.
- Make-up, filters, retouching, styling or skin preparation do not change the area; ask about sessions, timing, other treatments and results beyond the best case.
Ask: “Can I see unedited photographs taken under comparable conditions, with sessions, timing and any other treatments explained?”
Photography can change how results appear. One person’s outcome is not a guarantee of yours.
Full payment is asked for before the consultation
Consultation fees are normally quoted on their own. Being asked to pay for the whole procedure before you have been assessed is worth pausing on.
You are asked to book on the day
The Royal College of Surgeons' standards recommend a cooling-off period of at least two weeks for cosmetic surgery, and GMC guidance asks doctors to give you time to reflect — a discount that ends today is worth pausing on.
No written consent form before payment
GMC guidance expects the person carrying out a procedure to take your consent themselves and to give you time to reflect; ask to see the consent form before you pay.
Your specific risk questions get general answers
If you ask what could go wrong for you and the answer stays general, ask again until it becomes specific to you.
No clear route if something goes wrong
Ask who you would call out of hours and what happens if a corrective procedure is needed, and note how clearly it is answered.
Is a simple price list displayed in reception, and the complaints procedure visible?
GDC Standards 2.4.1 expect a simple price list displayed in reception and 2.4.2 clear prices on the website; 5.1.5 expects the complaints procedure displayed where patients can see it (professional standards).
