Legal · Formal notice & takedown
Request a formal removal.
This page is for the narrower set of cases where a simple correction isn't enough: defamation, invasion of privacy, copyright, or removal of a clinic page entirely. If your issue is a factual one we just need to fix, the lighter corrections route is faster. Everyone else: read on. We aim to triage every formal notice within two working days.

Section 01
Our commitment in one paragraph
We take complaints seriously. We don't rank clinics, we don't accept payment to remove or soften anything, and we don't want errors on our pages. If you write to us with a specific, well-formed complaint, we will read it carefully, investigate against the underlying public record, and either fix the page, annotate it with your response, or explain in writing why we've kept it as-is. We will not ignore you and we will not stall.
Section 02
Before you write to us
Two quick checks that often resolve things faster than a formal notice:
- Check the underlying source. Most factual fields on Unmist come from a public register (GMC, GDC, NMC, CQC) or from a clinic's own website. If a register has a wrong record, we can't fix it for you — you'll need to update it at source, then tell us and we'll re-check the page.
- Check the "last checked" date. If the clinic's site or a register has changed since that date, tell us and we'll re-check. That alone often resolves the issue.
Section 03
What to include in a notice
To act quickly we need a notice that we can verify. Please include:
- Your full name and the capacity in which you are writing (clinic owner, named practitioner, registered manager, the clinic's solicitor, a member of the public, a patient, a journalist).
- Your contact email address. If you're a clinic or a regulated practitioner, please use an email at the clinic's domain or a regulator-listed contact, so we can confirm the connection.
- The exact URL(s) of the Unmist page(s) you are referring to.
- The specific statement, chip, callout, or image you object to. Quoting it word-for-word, or screenshotting it with the surrounding context, is best.
- What is wrong with it — for example: it's factually incorrect (and what the correct version is); it's out of date (and the date the underlying record changed); it's your own personal data and you'd like it removed; it's defamatory in your view (and a clear explanation of why).
- Supporting evidence, where available — a link to the corrected register entry, a copy of the relevant certificate, a screenshot of the updated CQC report, a Companies House filing reference, etc.
- What outcome you're asking for — correction, annotation, removal, or right of reply.
A notice that lacks the URL and the specific statement is not actionable and we'll write back asking for it.
Section 04
Where to send it
Email hello@unmist.co.uk with the subject line "Notice & Takedown request". If you're writing about more than one URL, please send one email per clinic so we can track them properly.
You don't need a solicitor and we don't require any particular legal form of words. A clear, factual email is fine and is what we prefer.
Section 05
What we'll do, and how fast
Our service targets for notices are below. They are not guaranteed legal deadlines, and urgent or complex cases may require a different timetable.
- Aim: within 2 working days — we acknowledge your notice and tell you who is handling it.
- Aim: within 5 working days — for straightforward factual corrections backed by a public source, we will have actioned them and replied with the change.
- Aim: within 14 working days — for more complex notices (defamation claims, contested categorisations, claims we can't verify against public sources), we will have completed our investigation and written to you with the outcome.
If a notice raises an urgent risk — for example, content that is clearly defamatory, content that exposes someone's personal data, or content that might cause immediate harm — we'll treat it as a priority and aim to respond within 24 hours.
Section 06
Possible outcomes
After we've investigated, the page will end up in one of four states:
- Corrected. We've updated the page and logged the change in our public corrections log.
- Annotated. The factual content stands, but we've added a note alongside it (for example: "the clinic disputes this categorisation; their statement is here") so readers can see your view in context. This is often the right outcome for honest disagreements about emphasis or framing.
- Removed. Where required by law (for example, a successful UK GDPR erasure request for personal data, or content that turns out to be unverifiable on re-checking) we will remove the content and log that we've done so.
- Kept as-is, with reasons. If we conclude the content is accurate, fair, and properly sourced, we will explain that decision in writing, point to the underlying source, and tell you about your further options (see below).
Section 07
Defamation Act 2013 notices
For statements published by Unmist itself, use the correction and takedown process above. Section 5 concerns statements posted by third parties and may not apply to an Unmist-authored factsheet.
If you wish to make a formal notice of complaint under section 5 of the Defamation Act 2013 and the Defamation (Operators of Websites) Regulations 2013, please mark your email "Section 5 notice" and ensure it includes the information the complainant must provide under regulation 2: your name and email address; the exact statement complained of and where it appears; why you say it is defamatory; the meaning you attribute to it; which aspects you believe are factually inaccurate or opinions unsupported by fact; confirmation that you do not have enough information to bring proceedings against the original poster; and your choice on whether we may disclose your name and email address to that poster. Separate duties that apply to the website operator or poster are not requirements imposed on you as complainant.
We will respond within the statutory time limits.
Section 08
UK GDPR / DPA 2018 requests
If you are an individual asking us to action a right under UK GDPR or the Data Protection Act 2018 — for example a right of access, a right of rectification, or a right to erasure of personal data we hold — please see the "Your rights" section of our Privacy Policy, which sets out the process and the contact route. You can use the same hello@unmist.co.uk email; please title the message clearly (for example, "UK GDPR — erasure request") so we route it correctly.
Section 08b
Instagram processing — retired June 2026
Unmist previously tested a public Instagram marketing-footprint scan. That pipeline was retired in June 2026, its raw dumps were deleted, and no future Instagram scrape is scheduled.
The exclusion list is retained so a retired or replacement workflow cannot silently reintroduce an account that asked to be excluded. If you have a question about that historical processing, email hello@unmist.co.uk. Data-rights requests follow the process in our Privacy Policy; we may ask for limited corroboration before disclosing information to the requester.
Section 09
Bad-faith notices
We have one mild ask. Please don't send a takedown notice just because you don't like the look of a page. If a line accurately reflects the public record (e.g. "not clearly shown" when the clinic's own site really doesn't say it), the correct fix is to update the source and tell us, not to ask us to remove the line. We document outcomes transparently in our corrections log, and we may also note in that log when a clinic has asked for the removal of accurate content.
We treat every notice on the merits, but the bar for removing accurate, well-sourced content is, unsurprisingly, high.
Section 10
If we can't agree
If you're unhappy with the outcome of your notice, you have several routes available to you:
- For data protection complaints — escalate to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
- For defamation — instruct a solicitor; the Solicitors Regulation Authority maintains a public directory of qualified UK lawyers.
- For copyright — see our IP section in the Terms of Use and email us a takedown notice quoting the work and the infringing URL.
Section 11
Transparency log
We publish a brief, anonymised summary of takedown notices and their outcomes in our corrections log — what changed, when, and why — so the public can see how the process works in practice. Personal details of complainants are never published.
