What to check before implants or veneers
Implants and veneers permanently change your teeth and can run into thousands of pounds. The checks that matter most are public and free — and they are worth doing before, not after, the drill.
General information, not medical advice. Unmist does not assess your individual case or recommend any clinic or treatment. For a personal health concern, speak to a qualified professional or, if it is urgent, your GP or NHS 111.
Section 01
GDC registration — for everyone involved
Every dentist and dental care professional in the UK must be registered with the General Dental Council (gdc-uk.org). Search the name of the clinician who will do your treatment and confirm the registration is current. The register also shows their qualifications and registration date.
For implants in particular, ask about the clinician’s specific implant training and experience — implant placement is not a separate GDC specialism in the way some patients assume, so the question is worth asking directly.
Section 02
Veneers: how much tooth is removed
Veneers range from minimal-preparation to substantial removal of healthy tooth enamel, which is irreversible. Ask exactly how much tooth structure will be removed and whether less destructive options (such as composite bonding) have been considered for your case.
Ask to see the clinic’s own before-and-after work, and be wary of identical, uniformly bright “Hollywood” results presented as the only option.
Section 03
Materials, lab and guarantees
Ask what materials will be used (for implants, the implant system and brand; for veneers, the ceramic or composite) and which dental laboratory makes the restorations. Ask what guarantee or warranty applies and what it requires of you.
For implants, ask about the full treatment plan and timeline — placement, healing, and the final crown are usually separate stages.
Section 04
What the price includes
Headline prices often exclude consultations, scans, the abutment and crown, or follow-ups. Ask for an itemised written quote covering the whole course of treatment, and what happens — and at what cost — if a complication or failure occurs.
Unmist shows, per clinic, the practitioners named on the clinic’s own website with links to the GDC register, a link to the official CQC record where we have matched one, the treatments the clinic lists and any prices it publishes — from the public record and the clinic’s own site. We show the facts and never rank or recommend.
Frequently asked
Where do I check a dentist’s registration?
The General Dental Council register at gdc-uk.org. Every UK dentist and dental care professional must be registered; you can search by name and confirm it is current.
Are veneers reversible?
Often not. Veneers can involve irreversible removal of healthy enamel. Ask exactly how much tooth will be removed and whether a less destructive option such as composite bonding suits your case.
What should an implant quote include?
Ask for an itemised written quote covering consultation, scans, placement, the abutment and crown, and follow-ups — plus the cost if a complication or failure occurs. Headline prices often exclude stages.
Does Unmist rate dental clinics?
No. Unmist never rates, ranks or recommends. It shows publicly checkable facts — named practitioners with GDC register links, a link to the official CQC record where we have matched one, listed treatments and any published prices — so you can compare before booking.
Unmist publishes facts from the public record and the clinic’s own website. We never rank or recommend clinics, never say “best”, and never give medical advice — this guide is here to help you check what is clearly shown before you book.
